KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE CLASSES
K-1st Math with Shannon Van De Vanter

For math, we will work on recognizing numbers, writing numbers, adding, subtraction, clock work, money counting, etc. I believe in making learning fun with arts-n-crafts, hands on activities, games, singing, show-n-tell, story time and more!

In my art class we will look at famous artwork in history and follow it with an art project that embraces the style of art we are studying. I use a variety of art materials and mediums in the classroom including chalk pastels, oil pastels, watercolor, acrylic paints and more. – Becca
K-1st Mind and Heart – Social Emotional Learning with Wendy Yen

This mind + heart Social Emotional Learning class is filled with hands-on and mindful activities that encourage students to build important social skills and emotional awareness. Games, storybooks, crafts, discussions, and journals will be used to explore a variety of SEL topics. Topics include: 1. Emotions (identifying and labeling; What causes emotions; expressing emotions; labeling emotions) 2. Self Management (self-regulation and ways to calm down; self-control, and self esteem) 3. Growth Mindset (fixed vs. growth mindset; effort and perseverance; failure, mistakes and challenges) 4. Relationships (communication – listening and speaking; friendship/ teamwork & cooperation; sharing and taking turns) 5. Social Awareness (how feelings and behaviors affect others; building a community of compassion) 6. Kindness (what is kindness – ways to show; what to say; kindness challenge; generosity) 7. Respect (what is respect, honesty, gratitude, and acceptance) 8. Responsibility (responsibility, peaceful problem solving, goal setting)
K-1st Outdoor Explorers with Shannon Van De Vanter

This class will focus on sports and group games involving imagination, physical activity and skills. Children will be encouraged to connect with nature and enhance team building while bonding in the great outdoors (some days will be spent at the beach learning about ocean life and all its beautiful wonders). Parents must complete an off campus wavier.
K-1st Junior Scientists (My Great Space Adventure – bringing math and science to life!) with Wendy Yen

This year we will be studying space science. I will be using Blossom and Root science curriculum which provides a relaxed, hands-on adventurous exploration of space. This curriculum features an integrated math and science program in the form of a dramatic play journey. Throughout the course of the year, we will follow a weekly prompt together to prepare for, embark on, and complete a make believe journey into space. This curriculum will allow us the opportunity to explore many math and science topics,
including: the sun and its effect on living things; Earth, and how it supports life; the phases of our Moon; atmosphere; gravity; the planets of our Solar System; space exploration (history and technology); asteroids, comets, meteors, black holes, nebulas, etc.; counting up to 20 and down from 10 to 1; the concepts of greater / fewer / more than / less than / equal to; positional terms; sequencing patterns; quantities and numerals; measurement; number lines; basic shapes; calendar and dates; addition and subtraction; charts and graphs
K-1st Language Arts with Shannon Van De Vanter

In this class, I will provide a multi-sensory approach to reading. The comprehensive program I teach includes letter recognition, learning beginning sounds, word families, writing, beginning-to-reading skills, vocabulary and comprehension. K-1st Storytelling and Drama with Rebecca Newell

This class will introduce the students to the art of theatre through storytelling, improv games and movement. The goal to get comfortable on stage while working with fellow students to reenact their favorite fables and fairytales.
K-1st Yoga and Garden with Shannon Van De Vanter

Yoga – Increase focus, add flexibility and strength, increase body awareness and connection to breath in a playful and fun outdoor environment.
Gardening – Children will engage in fun activities that explore plant life cycles, examine plant diversity, and investigate the interdependence between plants and humans. Students will help plant and care for the Hub garden boxes. We will also care for the worm bin to help fertilize our garden. Dirt don’t hurt and worms don’t either…..:)

This class is meant to make math Fun! We will start each class with morning math puzzles, followed by a STEM challenge to gain confidence and improve math skills. “Math is Love” curriculum as well as several math board games will be used during class. Some of our favorites games are Clumsy Thief, Check the Oven, Zeus, Mountain Raiders, and ADSUMUDI.
2nd-3rd Poetry Explorers with Milly Haynes

Welcome to Poetry Explorers. This is an intro level course for young writers introducing various poetry styles, elements and figurative language. Students will develop essential writing skills through oral language activities and writing while celebrating their creativity and self expression. Join us as we embark on the inspiring journey of words, imagination, and speech communication. We will host a Poetry reading at the end of the semester along with a class collection of favorite poems.

Welcome to the captivating study of World Empires ranging from the mighty civilizations of Ancient Mesopotamia to the Global powers of the Modern Era. We will explore the rise and fall of some of the most influential empires across time and continents. This will be a hands on, project based class exploring fascinating customs, cultures, rulers, beliefs and monuments from each unique empire utilizing interactive notebooks. Let’s GO!!
2nd-3rd Cooking from around the World with Rebecca Newell and Milly Haynes

Students will learn a little history and geography while cooking up a storm. This class will explore both sweet and savory dishes from countries and cultures around the world and even back-in-time (tying into Ms. Milly’s World Empires Class). Our chefs will learn how to read recipes, maintain a clean workspace, and practice safe cooking. The goal is to foster a love for cooking and above all else, have a wonderful time.
2nd-3rd Ukulele with Rheanna Downey

- Students need their own ukulele
Learn ukulele basics. Suitable for both beginner and intermediate ukulele. Class will cover chord comprehension, rhythm and song structure, charting, tablature, and some beginning theory. Students will be given the ability to move at their own pace and level while in a group setting. Practice and performance will be highly encouraged.
2nd-3rd Drama with Rebecca Newell

This is an introductory drama class. The first two week of the semester we enjoy warm-up games and improvisational exercises. Next, we choose a play that fits our class, have a class read through, the top 3 character picks and in-class auditions. The remainder of the semester is dedicated to play practice and set design. There are two mandatory after-school practices leading up to the final performance at the end of the semester.

Welcome to our exciting journey through time with the “Who Was” series! In this course, students will dive into the lives of fascinating historical figures, from inventors and scientists to artists and leaders. Through engaging discussions, interactive activities, and creative projects, students will discover the stories behind these remarkable individuals and their contributions to the world.
Throughout the year, students will explore different “Who Was” biographies, delving into the lives and accomplishments of iconic figures such as Galileo, Amelia Earhart, Albert Einstein, and more. (Book choices will be chosen to connect learning in other courses taken at the Hub, as well as based on class interest. We will start with “Who Was Galileo” to tie in our Space Science class) Through guided reading sessions and group discussions, students will learn about the challenges these individuals faced, the achievements they made, and the impact they had on our world.
In addition to reading and discussing the biographies, students will participate in hands-on activities and projects inspired by the lives of the featured historical figures. They might create inventions like Thomas Edison, design artwork like Leonardo da Vinci, or conduct science experiments like Marie Curie.
Through this book study, students will not only develop a deeper understanding of history but also enhance their reading comprehension, critical thinking skills, and creativity. By the end of the course, students will have a newfound appreciation for the diverse individuals who have shaped our world and the power of their own potential to make a difference. In my Creative Writing class, students will enjoy the art of storytelling through engaging activities and guided practice. From crafting characters to building plots, young writers will unleash their imagination and develop essential writing skills. We will learn more about the writing process of brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing and publishing paragraphs, essays and short stories. This is a very hands on interactive class with lots of oral language and writing practice as well as positive peer feedback and collaboration.

- Moonlight Explorers – We will be walking off campus to Moonlight Beach. We will explore different activities including: Beach soccer, wiffle ball, volleyball, tag, sprints, and other outdoor games. It is important to be on time to class so we can begin our walk promptly at 11am. Some days PE will be spent on site as desired or during rainy weather.
